The overall design approach is rooted in a Peranakan-inspired design language, drawing from the hybrid cultural identity that has long existed between Chinese heritage and Indonesian local traditions. Rather than functioning purely as a visual reference, this approach informs how materiality, detailing, spatial composition, and furniture elements are carefully developed to create an environment that feels culturally authentic while remaining contemporary, accessible, and functional for long-term public engagement.
Each section within the gallery is intentionally designed with meticulous consideration toward the specific artifacts, archival objects, and historical materials being exhibited. The spatial narrative follows the journey of the Chinese-Indonesian community from the 1960s to the present day, tracing how cultural identity, traditions, and everyday life have continuously evolved since the early arrival and settlement of Chinese communities in Indonesia. Every display system and exhibition element is carefully adapted to accommodate the unique characteristics of each object, ensuring both preservation requirements and optimal visitor interaction remain central to the design process.
Beyond physical artifacts, the gallery experience extends into a series of immersive and interactive installations designed to encourage deeper public engagement with cultural learning. These include experiential spaces and participatory elements such as interactive educational games exploring the significance of Chinese-Indonesian culinary traditions, as well as installations allowing visitors to experience representations of traditional Chinese attire. These interventions transform the gallery into an active learning environment, creating opportunities for audiences to engage with culture beyond passive observation.
